ADOPT A PLATOON
Adopt a Platoon is a group of volunteer moms that
coordinate sending care packages to soldiers. We don't send
things, but all of our kids got pen pals and have been LOVING
writing back and forth to their soldiers. Some can't respond
but the ones that do are SO grateful to get their letters and
write back. It has become the highlight of our homeschool
experience!!!
It takes a couple of months to get it up and going but these
mothers are very committed and will definitely follow up with
you once you contact them. We e-mailed them on their website.

BOOK NOOK

All Ages

A couple of years ago, as I perused the children's Science section of our
local library, my eyes alighted on
Starfish
and I scooped
it from the shelf. Starfish, originally
published in 1962 and read by children in Montessori
schools, was republished in 2000 as part of
the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series.
In simple, easy to understand language the reader
learns that starfish have arms, but no legs;
feet, but no toes; a mouth, but no eyes, ears,
or nose. The author describes different kinds
of starfish. Edith Hurd shares how a starfish
grows, moves, and eats. She divulges where they
live. An art project and tips on finding starfish
are included at the end of the book.
Although Starfish is
geared towards children in Preschool and Kindergarten,
all of my children find the book interesting and
informative. They especially liked learning that
the ray of a starfish grows back. Little did I know,
when I plucked this book from the shelf, that I
had found a star of the sea. Little did I know,
that this book would introduce me to what has become
an integral part of our Science studies, the
Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science
series.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Community service always looks
great on college and/or job
applications! Our Lady
of Guadalupe Maternity Center
(located in
Lakewood
) is greatly in need of volunteer
workers to assist needy children
and their families. They are
open for their clients M, W,
F from
10:00
to
1:30 p.m.
On Tuesdays and
Thursdays, they are closed to
the public and work on preparing
the clothing, etc. They
are always in need of donations
of maternity clothing, baby
items and especially clothing
for children ages 3, 4, 5 and
6. If you knit or crochet,
they would welcome your creations
of baby booties, hats, sweaters
and blankets! Some of
the parishes in the area sometimes
sponsor “baby showers” and collect
donations from their parishioners.
This would be another great
project for a teen to organize
and list on a college application!

Education is not the piling on of
learning, information, data, facts,
skills, or abilities - that's training
or instruction - but is rather making
visible what is hidden as a seed.
